Media and journalism

The media industry is an important field of employment for many people with degrees in language and literature studies. There are numerous possible careers in the press, on radio and television or in the online media, including those of journalist, columnist, presenter, editor and proofreader among others. In all types of media, the work consists of conveying information.
However, it is becoming more and more difficult to break into the media sector. Students should begin working in journalism as early as possible and in small steps – such as writing reports about local events or controversial local council projects. Someone who can show a varied portfolio of articles and reviews will have the best chance of earning a living as an editor after graduating. Since Switzerland currently has a media surplus which is rapidly being reduced, the number of vacancies for traditional journalism in print, TV and radio will continue to fall. However, in recent years online journalism has also offered opportunities for those at the start of their careers, since this field is less occupied by established professionals.
